Plain and Simple Romance

Beverly Lewis book
In today’s society, where we have to worry about what we might see on the television or hear on the radio and even have to worry about some of the books that we pick up for a weekend read, it is nice to know that there are books that offer all the characteristics of a romance without all the sex. They are books written about the American Amish and are becoming extremely popular among romance readers. These aptly named “bonnet books” offer a new perspective on popular fiction. The books have love, passion, romance but also offer humility and plainness of the Amish culture. Authors such as Beverly Lewis, Cindy Woodsmall, and Wanda Brunstetter, just to name a few, have introduced us to a new plain and simple lifestyle. Throw in a short history lesson and some Pennsylvania Dutch, and you have a brilliant formula for a romance novel!
I have to be honest, before this blog, I did not know anything about these “bonnet novels” and then an article from Time Magazine came across my desk that explained all about them. I am not usually a “romance” reader, but I decided to pick one of these books up and see what all the fuss was about. I have to admit that at first I was a little skeptical, but as I kept reading, I changed my mind. The book was very enjoyable and interesting in the way that it seemed so simple but at the same time so complex. The characters had to deal with so many emotions, feelings, and situations that, in a way, everyone deals with.
If you are a romance reader or not, you definitely should pick up one of these Amish books and give it a try. In the library we have several of these books by different authors. We have the Heritage of Lancaster County Series, the Postcard and Crossroad series, Annie’s People series, and Abram’s Daughter series by Beverly Lewis. We also offer Daughter’s of Lancaster County series and the Sisters of Holmes County series by Wanda Brunstetter and some books by Cindy Woodsmall. These books are checked out quite frequently, so if you would like to read one, you may have to put it on hold and have a short wait. However, if you are a romance reader, it is worth it!
